Stanley Park Mixer Recap By Daria Wojnarski
The Stanley Park Club Mixer on Sunday, June 1st was another success … despite the best efforts of the nearby blue heron colony.
Several players experienced uncomfortably close calls with heron droppings (semi liquid, mostly white and very smelly) as they flew in and out of their nests. One FCTC member though it was raining when one bird did its thing over a tennis court.
Thirty-two people participated in the mixer at Stanley Park. Although the skies were cloudy, it didn't rain. The event began at 1 pm and ended at 5 pm with snacks and juice on hand.
Participants then met up at Milestone's on Denman Street for dinner. Prizes were handed out to best male and female (determined by percentage of games won verses games played). Pauline Lui came in first and Sandy Drummond came in second for the ladies, while Bob Cockcroft came in first for the men and Paul Hegele came in second. Congratulations!
A draw for jackets embroidered with the FCTC logo was also held and the winners were Brian Sweet and Jacqui Bohling.
Special thanks to Ray Sotto for taking care of the registration and Jacqui and Kevin Smyth for organizing the snacks and drinks.

First Annual Capilano Challenge By Moira Munro
First Annual Capilano Challenge
Never mind the First Annual, we’re looking forward to the Second Annual Capilano Challenge, because we are out for revenge!
The FCTC contingent arrived in North Vancouver on Saturday, June 14, dressed appropriately, all in white, full of hope, and eager for some tennis. Howie Jackson, the club pro since 1986, had everything beautifully organized - individual cards for each person with their number and court listed for every half-hour match. We all played two hours out of the three, two mixed and two mens’ or womens’ sets. In the two half hours off court, we had time to chat, munch and explore the clubhouse.
The Capilano Club has been running since the seventies, off Capilano Road, tucked into the upperlevels’ cloverleaf on the north side of the highway. There are four courts, and a brand new clubhouse. For many years the facility was just a trailer, but now it is a two-storey building equipped with showers, a full kitchen, dining room, ping-pong table, television, an upper deck with a view of all four courts, and a putting green off to one side. Wow, are we jealous!
What about the tennis?? Well, frankly, there was some good, some bad, and some ugly, and believe me, all three of those applied to me. The FCTC men gave the CTC men a good go, but truth be told, the women were outclassed. They really brought out their big guns, and we struggled to get points. But a good time was had by all, and even though they won the golden racquet, good sportsmanship reigned supreme. Of course, some food & drink after we finished helped to lighten the atmosphere. If only we could host them in some equally nice facility. Sigh.
So next year...
PS: Editor's Note: There is talk that a rematch may done in September!!!!
